Changes

It seems like from the second human beings are created, and I do mean from that whole embryonic state, life starts introducing us to changes.  When we think of that tiny speck of a person, and then look at all the ways they’ve changed when they step into that kindergarten classroom for the first time, it’s awe-inspiring.

Life goes on, boys becoming men, girls realizing that being a woman includes things we never imagined, like monthly visits from Aunt Flo.  We learn and we grow, and and everything keeps changing.  From living with our parents, to being on our own, to getting married and having families of our own.

At some point over the past decade or so, most of us have experienced what it’s like to live in the ‘future.’  A place filled with things that fell into the whole sci-fi category not so long ago.

I mean, back when our grandparents were kids, who could ever have imagined the internet, or what it would do to expand our world?  Talk about some major changes!  And speaking of the internet, I have just one thing to say…

Enough with the changes for crying out loud!

In the past few months every program I use online has threatened  promised a new and improved version of whatever it is I’m using.  My website, my blog, my Gmail account…Twitter.

Next up on the chopping block is Facebook with its new Timeline.  Most everyone I know hates it and doesn’t want it.  I feel the same way.

Mark Zuckerberg…please don’t ruin our Facebook.  In the famous words of The Beatles….

Let it Be!

Oh, we’ve all been there. Only known palliative: vent, go play in the snow (or scrabble or whatever), eat delectable cozy food, treat yourself to a comfort shelf romance and maybe a little chocolate something. When your heart is peaceful once more, go back to your computer to face the onslaught. Because you’re right, after each wave, there’s another. Especially when we don’t pay for the software or service (e.g., FB, Twitter, Google), the companies are only so interested in what we have to say because we are not the true customers, merely the users.

On the up side, we’re all in this together! What each of us learns can benefit the others. And we’re all sympathy!

    • Well, I’ve vented. I’ve played a few games (no snow to play in, darn it!). And I’ve had chocolate…a Warm Delights brownie…that I ruined with black walnuts. Who knew they didn’t taste as good as English walnuts? Not ME…but I ate it anyway. First, it was about 1:30 a.m. and I wasn’t running to town to buy another. And second…when I need chocolate bad enough to gag down black walnuts (or other nasty stuff), it’s just best all the way around that I suck it up and get it over. (hopefully I’ll remember to NEVER buy those nuts again)

And even more hopefully…everyone who has learned to use Timeline will share whatever they’ve learned….BUT in a Timeline for Dummies kind of way. 🙂

The FB ‘wizard’ stepped me through converting my personal page to their timeline format. It was pretty simple. While I was working, I had the option to return to the old format if I wanted to, which was reassuring in case I made a disaster of it. But I think that option went away after I approved my timeline. I didn’t think the old FB layout was very good, so timeline doesn’t seem bad to me. At least it’s got more real estate for photos.

I’ve seen a post or two about converting fan pages. For people with tabs and gizmos and landing pages and such, changes are a-coming. And that’s about all I know. (BigLifeProject page is a community page, and i haven’t seen anything about them. Knowing FB was going to make changes, I didn’t invest anything in page design. I’ll let the dust settle, then figure out what I can do with the new layout.)

In the meantime, per your request:

I hate all the changes routinely made to Facebook. Stop it already!!!

I’m in the minority here. I don’t mind the new timeline. But I really hate the new twitter I got with my new upload this week. I think they change things so that you are forced to spend more time on their site learning. In truth, it makes me want to stay away. But we’re not supposed to do that, right?

    • Maybe we’re not supposed to stay away but that’s how it works for me. I try to streamline my schedule so it works better for me, then all the sites roll out changes that force me to spend more time there trying to figure out how to use them again… It annoys me, and when something annoys me, I tend to avoid it.

Since you do like the timeline, I may be hitting you up for HELP! I hate it and don’t want to figure out how to use it! 🙂

  4. I have buried my head in the sand with timeline. dumb I know, but since i have no intention of posting pictures or going back with my history, it is going to be a major nuisance for me.

i wonder what the next big thing will be. Technology history shows FB will not be here forever and the more they force these changes on us, the more likely that change is to happen.

    • You’re right about that, Louise. Most everyone in my friends list has cut back on their FB usage since they rolled out that last change. I’m with you though…I keep ignoring the box that tells me I can check it out. I’m keeping this version until March 30th…and then I’ll pout and whine and complain for a couple of weeks. Then I’ll figure out how to use it.

I agree 100%, leave it alone, it’s working and the biggest reason I’m on facebook so infrequently is because of all the changes and having to relearn it every few weeks.

    • Amen to that! Why fix what isn’t broken? It’s like your best recipe for chocolate chip cookies…you’re not going to ruin the cookies by constantly tweaking the recipe. Facebook rules because of the way it was initially made. Now it’s being ruined because they can’t leave it alone. 🙁

I (and most everyone else) has hated every other change Facebook has implemented, users have railed and begged and complained, but they keep the changes, we adapt, get used to new format, start to enjoy the new format until it becomes Normal.

And then a new one is rolled out. It’s enough to make a person leave.

twitter, by contrast, makes minor changes, very infrequently. Nothing has exploded. I like Twitter.
