Week 7 of The Next Big Thing

Well, obviously I’ve not figured out how to use the scheduling feature so that it actually works. So here this is, a day late… (August 15, 2012 @ 1:15 was yesterday, correct?)

I’d like to say thank you to Karen Pokras Toz for tagging me last week in The Next Big Thing.

And the rules are:

***Answer the ten questions about your current WIP (Work In Progress)

***Tag five other writers/bloggers and add their links so we can hop over and meet them.

It’s that simple.

Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing:

What is the working title of your book?

I seem to have a bit of a jinx as far as titles go. So far the one I’ve chosen hasn’t been used before, so I’m just going to keep it to myself-and hope for the best. That goes for the working title, too. Sorry.  🙂

Where did the idea come from for the book?

From every little girl’s dream to have a fairytale romance. Seriously, most little girls…and even some women…want to meet the Knight in Shining Armor, don’t they?

What genre does your book fall under?

I would guess that romance would best describe it. Romance with a bit of mystery thrown in.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Robert Downey Jr. would make a great Cameron. I’ll have to think about who might play Laura. Some of the other characters could be a little tough to cast. I use photographs of celebrities, or from magazines, to help me visualize my characters, but some are too old now, and some aren’t actors. For Sam, I used a photo of a teenage Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Nolan is based on a snapshot of Keith Urban that I just love. Mark Harmon would make a fantastic Finley. Jeremy Irons…well, I can’t tell you which character I’d like him to play. It’s a secret. I’m not sure for the rest.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

I have a hard time coming up with a blurb for the back cover…one sentence??? Hmm. How about this…  Can love find a way when secrets and danger abound.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

After a great deal of research, I made the decision to self-publish all of my books, including this one. If an agent or publisher decides I’ve written something that they would like to be involved with, I might consider representation. But I won’t go courting it.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

In total? I’d say not much more than a month. How long will the editing take? Probably a few more.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I’ve never read a book with this exact plot. Which isn’t to say that there aren’t books that are similar, I just haven’t read any of them.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Like I mentioned above, it’s my grownup version of a fairytale. But the main reason I was inspired to do this story is because I suffered a mild TBI in an auto accident about four years ago. For a awhile I was afraid I might have lost the ability to write. Fortunately the problems were mostly related to pain-induced fatigue, and as that resolves itself, the writing comes easier again.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

A Michigan native, I chose to set this story in one of my favorite places -where our lower peninsula meets the upper part of our state. The story takes place mostly on Bois Blanc Island. It’s located maybe twelve miles from the Mackinaw Bridge, and less than five miles from a huge tourist attraction. Perhaps some of the readers remember that Mackinaw Island was the setting for the 1980 movie, Somewhere In Time, starring the late, great Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

I’m tagging: Debra Kristi, Breeana Puttroff, JakiCheli, Louise Behiel, and Tameri Etherton.

So, ladies, if you could have your posts ready for Week 8 of The Next Big Thing, that would be great. If not, don’t sweat it. It will be fun to read them whenever you get them ready.

  3. How did I miss this? Ugh. Your scheduling feature, my brain. They both work only when they feel like it.

What fun learning about your book and process. I love that you’re writing a grown-up fairytale. Thanks for tagging me! I’ll have my post up tomorrow (8/20), to make your week 8 deadline.

    • Oops. I’m thinking I might have left a step out. Like MAYBE letting the people I tagged know… Um… Hmm. Not sure I’ve ever said this before but…my bad. 🙂

I’ll look forward to seeing your answers. 🙂

Great, KK, thanks for sending out another message of expectation we guys can’t live up to. 🙂

Aren’t you all setting the bar a little high with the weaker species? Are we the ones from Mars or Venus – I can never remember. hehehe

    • Oh thank you for the laugh, MJ! I have it on good authority that men are NOT from Mars. There is no ESPN (that’s the sports channel, right?), no beer, and no porn on Mars, therefore, there are no men on Mars. 🙂

And you’re wrong. Most guys can be that knight. Not like the guys from a fairytale…but then I actually prefer that guys don’t wear tights, or cold metal suits.

As long as they really hear a woman (75.348% of the time), like to snuggle, know how to stop and ask for directions, and a a couple other things, they can all be that prince. 🙂

Thanks for the reminder – I need to watch some ESPN before college football season starts. 😉 Especially now that my Cornhuskers are in the Big 10, or whatever that midwest conference is now called.

I’m at about 65% on the listening scale, so I have another 10.348% to go, darn it! And yeah, I’m not into the tights so much. 🙂

        • I might watch ESPN someday. After I scrub both toilets with Barbie’s toothbrush, sweep all the cobwebs down, and take care of the 3/4 acre lawn with my nail clippers…

Good job on the listening…and yeah…Mikhail Baryshnikov is the only guy I’ve ever seen who managed to pull off the whole tights thing. Even Robin Hood should have gone for knickers or something. 🙂

  5. Debra Kristi says:

Coolness! How fun. Don’t you hate that about titles? I kept my title to myself for that very reason and it was all good until this last year and someone used it. Bummer.

You just made my post for next week easy. Now to decide which story to write about. Any thoughts? Should I do the story I’m editing or the one I started writing?

    • Yes. I absolutely hate the headaches involved with titles. They’re hard enough to come up with in the first place…then to discover they’re already taken. I’m sorry you’ve lost yours, but I do understand how that goes.

I’m looking forward to your post. As to which one you should use…if I get to be a beta reader for the one you’re editing…do the other one. 🙂

  6. Loved reading about your newest project Kristy! Oh & Robert Downey Jr.. good choice. I just saw Sherlock Holmes the other day & he was awesome!

    • Thanks, Karen! And Robert Downey Jr. is so far beyond awesome that I don’t even think there’s a word for it, lol. I love that guy! I have both Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man movies…and am chomping at the bit for The Avengers to be released on DVD (saw it THREE times the week it came out in theaters). 🙂

Sorry about the delayed posting. My WordPress seems to be seriously messed up. Hopefully I’ll get it fixed…and figure out why scheduling it didn’t work. 🙁
