I Have a Favor to Ask…

By now, most of you know that for ten and a half months a year, I hate shopping. And by now, most of you also know that because of crowds and rude shoppers, I really, really, really hate it the last six weeks of the year.

Yup. It’s like most people check their holiday spirit at the entrance to the parking lot … and forget all about picking back up it until they’re ready to pull back out on the street again.

I know that all the people who read this blog are nice, considerate, and should be the ones filling the stores I’ll be in over the next few weeks, but I’d like to encourage everyone to be a little more mindful of our fellow shoppers.

And not only that, let’s spread the word to everyone we know, kind of a pay it forward movement. No matter how good the deal, no matter how rushed we are, we’re going to smile and be polite – no matter how much we might want to run the people who refuse to reciprocate over with our cars or shopping carts.

Just think of the impact each one of us could have. The more people we can get on board with this plan, the nicer the 2013 Christmas shopping season could be. In fact, it might be one of the nicest in recent history. Probably in distant history, too.

Unless someone could guarantee me that I could have Bruce Willis, Kiefer Sutherland AND Jeffrey Dean Morgan all to myself for a full week, there isn’t an incentive on the planet that would get me into a store at four in the morning on Black Friday with crowds like that.

What about you? Do you like my plan? Do YOU set the alarm and hit the ground running early Black Friday morning? Or are you like me, and you avoid stores as much as humanly possible until the Monday after Thanksgiving.

I used to shop every Black Friday in my younger days 😉 I’m much smarter now. 😉

I guess that means I’ve always been smarter than you then. 😀

Psst…for anyone who thinks I’m being really rude, Lynn is an old friend and she slings insults as good or better than I do. 🙂

  2. I avoid the stores as much as possible from now until after New Years, forget the Monday after Thanksgiving. Even then I make sure I go as late in the evening as I can stand, unfortunately that makes “ME” the awful person you scowl at, like the other night at Walmart with my $400 dollars worth of merchandise and nothing over $20.00 so I was there a long while, and two lines open in the whole store, at least they finally opened another for the poor line of people behind me. 🙂 My Mother better appreciate me doing her Christmas shopping for her. 😉

I don’t know what happened to my reply, but I’m the same way, Kathie. Too funny about your cart full of gifts, lol. The worst I’ve ever seen was when my daughter and I went to the store two or three years ago … at midnight for a DVD movie release. She’s a huge fan of the series, and since the DVD releases are always near her birthday, going to spend quality time with one or two hundred strangers is part of the gift. Except for that one, the manager totally ticked me off. I even called the next day to give him a piece of my mind. Why? Because they only had two lanes open…with lines so long you couldn’t see the end of them. And some of the parents decided to do their grocery shopping, so they had full carts.

Normally that wouldn’t have bothered me because there aren’t many people in the store after ten or eleven. But for an event like that…two lanes. Grr!

But that’s basically what it will be like for the next six week. Yuck.
