Snot Bubbles & Snowmen

I almost turned Snowmen off in the first three minutes because of the aforementioned snot bubbles (yeah, I can’t believe I said it twice either). To say I have a weak stomach is a bit of an understatement, and I sat here sort of peeking through my fingers at the edge of the screen hoping the scene would be over soon. If it wasn’t, I was going to forget about the movie. If they repeated it, I was also going to pass on it.

But I’m glad I didn’t.

By now, many of you probably know that I tend to hunt for good movies few people have ever heard of. With 308 ratings from IMDB, Snowmen seems to fall into that category (as opposed to something like The Avengers, which has nearly 600,000).

Snowmen is a really good movie.

A year ago, Billy Kirkfield’s father told him he had a cold. The truth was, Billy actually had cancer. Given a twenty percent chance of beating it, he spends most of the movie believing he’s going to die. His parents have told him he’s going to be okay, but he has another ‘cold,’ and his father is still hugging him a lot.

Before he dies, he decides he wants to make his mark in the world, to do something he’ll always be remembered for. After a couple of failed attempts, with the help of his best friends – Lucas and Howard – they decide they’re not only going to beat the record for the most snowmen built in twenty-four hours, they’re going to set the bar so high no one will ever be able to top it.

Throw into the mix a school bully who hates Billy, classmates who are afraid to get close to him for fear they might catch his cancer, an ill-timed temperature increase on the day, a great cast of additional characters (including Ray Liotta (Field of Dreams) and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), a wonderful script, and plenty of snow…and in my book, this is a winner. It deserved more publicity than it got.

This is a story that made me laugh, made me cry, and made me smile through my tears. Totally, totally worth the ninety minutes you’ll spend watching it.
