A Fun Experience

About three years ago, my daughter looked at me, her expression one of disbelief. She commented on know how I could get even the most unfriendly of cashiers to talk to me while they were checking out my purchases. And we’re talking cashiers who act like it hurts them to say hello to their customers.

Given my naturally introverted nature, it’s kind of a surprise to me too, but the other day, it really hit home that I can converse with pretty much anyone … at the drop of a hat.

When driving home from one of the stores I shop at, I tend to cut through a really quiet, kind of upper class neighborhood. I like that there’s not much traffic, plus the houses are pretty. At one of the stop signs, I noticed that there was no one behind me, so I just sat there and pulled a piece of gum out of my purse.

At the same time, I noticed a woman waiting to cross the street, so I waved her to come across. As she neared the van, I rolled the window down and explained what I was doing. Don’t ask me why, I just did. That’s the kind of thing I’m as likely to do as not.

She walked up to the door, since there were still no cars behind me, and we just chatted for three or four minutes there. I even pulled my phone out to show her a photo of Aria. (you’d be surprised how many times I’ve done that with perfect strangers – I’m getting really fast at pulling my favorite picture up)

What amazed me is that I really enjoyed talking with her. Just the same as I do with the cashiers. I’m the kind of person who can sit in my office almost every waking minute for days at a time, barely talking to anyone, but get me out around the public and I’m a regular old chatterbox.

Maybe I listen to too much silence?

What about you? Do you tend to strike up conversations with perfect strangers too?
