283 Days Until Christmas

That’s right, folks. I keep thinking of this as the new year, but in less than four minutes, eighty-two days will have passed since the famous Times Square Ball Drop rang in 2014. March is almost over…

Where has the first quarter of the year gone?

In Michigan, we’ve spent these months in a deep freeze, hip deep in snow. As I write this, we have a ten degree windchill, and sometimes it seems like the bone-chilling cold will never make way for warmer temps.

Yeah. Don’t faint. Much as I love winter, I’m ready to see thermometer readings above thirty-two. Every day.

Let’s be clear here. I’m not looking forward to ninety and one-hundred degree heat indexes, but I am tired of never feeling quite warm enough. And I have to admit, if all I’m going to see is brownish grass everywhere I look (now that most of the white stuff melted during a brief warm up a week or so ago), winter might as well give way to spring so I can see green.

While I was pondering this tonight, I found myself actually looking forward to how fast it will happen. In a few weeks, I’ll go to bed, and when I wake up, spring will be here. Trees and bushes that were bare the day before will show signs of life again. Green buds will pepper the landscape as far as the eye can see. In another week or two, they’ll burst into tiny leaves. Flowers will begin to bloom, and the grass will spring up, bright and beautiful. And needing to be mowed soon, but that’s beside the point.

It will happen much like one of my favorite songs, suddenly. And when it does, beauty won’t be just ‘up above,’ it will be all around us. Everywhere we look. And even though I know it’s coming, even though I’m expecting it, much like falling in love, it will still take me by surprise.
