Bowls, Anyone?

I’ve been blogging so long now that I can’t remember what I might have shared with you already.  If I haven’t mentioned it before, my son is autistic, and a very interesting young man.  I actually got to spend some one-on-one time with him for awhile this afternoon when he went to the grocery store with me.  We won’t think about the fact that I basically blackmailed him to come along (as in…you’re almost out of Pepsi and if you want anymore, you’re going to have to come to the store with me because I’m not lugging it in and out of the car).

With the exception of video game stores, my son would be happy if he never had to set foot in one-ever.  But his sister is out on her second date with a new boyfriend and I wanted company.  Even so, he took the disruption to his schedule (video games) in stride and was quite pleasant during the trip.

He wasn’t in a really chatty mood but, since I’m always in a fairly chatty mood, I kept him engaged in conversation both coming and going.  On the drive into town I pointed out a huge blow up football player doll anchored in someone’s front yard and said, “Hey look.  Someone likes U of M.”  As we got closer I realized it was another team and corrected myself.  It was a Detroit Lions doll.

“I like the Lions,” my son said.

“What about tigers and bears, too?” I asked.  He just rolled his eyes and shook his head.  Like my daughter, he has the whole sarcasm thing down pretty well.  Wonder where they got that from?  Hmm, hmm, hmm…  (casually tapping foot, looking innocent, and trying to whistle nonchalantly, but I never did learn to whistle so I’m not having a whole lot of luck there)

Anyway, this brings me to my point, and yes I did have one.  Why isn’t there an Oz or Wizard Bowl?  The Lions could play the Tigers, and the winner would go up against the Bears?

I mean seriously, from what I see, there are all sorts of bowls (because, of course, there aren’t enough regular football games).  And there are so many more they could add.  What about the Cereal or Mixing Bowl?  Or the Bread Bowl?  Popcorn Bowl, anyone?  And then there’s my personal favorite possibility…the Toilet Bowl.

No, I’m not a huge football fan.  Not that I have anything against it, except maybe the fact that these teams have a pretty skewed idea of what an hour-long game should be.  And they should never be allowed to play on holidays.  They need to be home with their families, and I need my family focused on family, not a sporting event.

I just don’t get the whole football thing.  Until a few days ago I thought touchdown was two words (thank God for Word 2007’s blue-line feature).  And I’ve been chewed out before for saying things like the Lions have the prettiest outfits.  They’re NOT outfits!  They’re uniforms!

Odds are good I’ll never understand the appeal of the game, or the game itself, but I’m okay with that.  I don’t expect everyone I know to understand the appeal of writing, or why I’d rather spend three hours doing that instead of watching big guys in pretty uniforms chasing a little ball all over the field, risking life and limb for points.

Oh well.  Enough of that.  Time to go spend some more quality time with my son.  Since my daughter still isn’t home from her afternoon date, he gets to help me with supper.  Maybe we can talk some more about lions, and tigers, and bears.  Or not.  Because that kid probably knows, and can quote, every single line from The Wizard of Oz.  And having listened to that movie about ten thousand times when they were younger, I really have no desire to go there again.

Maybe we could talk about suggesting a Salad Bowl to the NFL instead.
