He’s Baaack

Elliot Owens has returned for Mail Day this week.  For those who may be scratching their heads and wondering what in the world this is all about, I’ll tell you.  Most Mondays lately, I’ve been introducing some of the characters from my new book, Enza (available April 23).  Only seven weeks left!

My dearest Father,

Imagine my surprise when I discovered a letter from you when Meg and I opened the box with your gifts to the children.  My father, who would rather muck out a dozen horse stalls than put pen to paper.  Of course you know I’m joshing.  It was a pleasant surprise to see your familiar handwriting, though at first I feared something must have happened to mother.

What do I think of your idea for her?  Well I think a holiday in Florida next month is a swell Christmas gift.  I can just see her now, shopping and packing – and probably shopping some more.   By the time the train leaves the station I expect you’ll be more than ready for a vacation.

We shall look forward to receiving the promised post cards, all the while wishing we were enjoying the warmer weather with you.  I don’t remember winter ever being quite this cold before.  Meg says it isn’t colder at all.  We’re just getting older so it only feels that way.  I suppose she could be right.  Of course I don’t think it has anything to do with age at all.  I think it’s simply because it is colder this year.

I wish you could be here to see the children.  They were already excited about Christmas before your box arrived but, now that they know there are gifts in the house from Grandmother and Grandfather, they’re counting down the minutes.  At least Jonathon is.  I’m not sure what he asked you for but he’s convinced that you’ve made his dreams come true.  I remember what it was like to be ten years old.

Someday, though, he will get to the place where he looks forward to spending the day with his family more than he does the presents.  Not that he would believe that for a moment.  At this point in his life he has little patience with Charles and Kathleen and has vowed to never marry and have children.   I think I shall enjoy reminding him of that when he holds his first child in his arms.

For now, however, I’m afraid it’s back to work for me.  With the holiday so close it seems that half of the people in town are needing shoes – either to give as gifts or to wear to parties.  I’m complaining, mind you.  It’s just time to restock the shelves.

Much love, and a very Merry Christmas to the both of you.

Your son,

Elliot
