Music to Motivate the Muse

If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know that I love music … especially videos. And if you don’t, going back through my older posts will reveal that one song or another is featured in a fair number of them.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to music, always wished I could play an instrument, and have owned at different times some pretty fancy keyboards and a guitar. Early on, I discovered I wasn’t nearly coordinated enough to learn guitar chords. I’ve also never been disciplined enough to get good on the piano. Oh, I do fairly well (on a beginners level) with my right hand, and I can pick out the melody to a few songs by ear and write the notes on blank sheet music. But I’m as far removed from being good or talented as the majority of American Idol contestants.

Fortunately, I do play (and sing) better than this poor gentleman – but I can guarantee you, Randy and Paula would still be laughing themselves sick if they heard me do either one.

So I thank God for people who are talented. They provide endless hours of enjoyment for me, and I listen to everything from Dean Martin to Aerosmith.

And it’s good that I like a huge variety because the right music makes my job so much easier.

When I was writing Enza, I researched popular music from 1918 and made a playlist to help put me in the right frame of mind.

Definitely won’t hear anything like this on the radio today!

Since I mostly write contemporary romance – or chick lit – whichever you prefer to call it, I can listen to a much wider variety. And that variety almost always includes REO Speedwagon and Boston, two of my very favorite groups. Still, you’ll find some Dean Martin, Alan Jackson, Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and Straight No Chaser on those lists too.

Rarely will I ever listen to straight country – but for my new book (my twentieth story!), that’s exactly what I’m doing – with this guy being one of my number one choice.

Yeah. Toby Keith. Perfect choice for the hero of this story!

And now that I’ve wasted all the time I can justify, it’s time for me to open the file to yet another pristine white page. One that’s waiting to be filled with lots and lots of words.
