Nolan’s Cover … and a Mini-Rant

Okay, so maybe it’s not so much a rant as it is an … well I don’t know what to call it exactly.

I’m kind of a live and let live person. We’re all different, and that’s okay. It’s part of what makes the world interesting. As long as something is legal and moral, go for it. But if I choose a different path, allow me that right – without passing judgment.

For instance, there are those who have gone gluten-free who feel you should basically just eat meats, fruits, veggies, beans, dairy (maybe), and the few gluten-free grains available. Anything else isn’t being true to the gluten-free lifestyle.

I am not a follower of that philosophy. Not even a little bit.

Gluten-free is not a lifestyle I chose. It was forced on me for health reasons. While I’ve accepted it as part of my life – forever – I still resent having to eat a special diet. I don’t want to be stuck with meats, fruits, veggies, beans, dairy, and a few safe grains. I’m tired of going to restaurants and only being able to choose from very basic menu items while everyone else gets to enjoy foods I can only gaze longingly at.

I want the pizzas, pastas, batter-dipped/deep fried fish, pancakes, biscuits, dumplings, breads, and other baked goods (brownies!). I jumped for freaking joy when I found that Walmart and Rite Aid sell their versions of Velveeta Shells and Cheese and Kraft Mac & Cheese. And I don’t need to take out a loan to buy them.

For those who choose not to eat those substitutes, who stick to far healthier diets … believe me when I say I wish I had your willpower and determination. I really do.

But I don’t. So please stop judging me – and others like me. We don’t want a to live a life deprived of foods we love. That doesn’t make us bad or weak people. It makes us individuals who make choices based on our wants and needs, not yours.

Live and let live.

And now that I’ve gotten that out of my system….

Nolan - small coverI know. I’m a few days later than I planned, but here it is. Finally.
