Puppies, Puppies Everywhere

Okay. They’re not everywhere, but it sure feels like it.

We’d been wanting a companion for Jack, who still seems to miss Shadow after more than a year, so I was kind of on the lookout for just the right puppy … and I found him. Except he had a sibling, or at least a dog who came from the same house, and we just couldn’t take him and leave her there.

So we took them both.

DagwoodThis is Dagwood, the puppy I really, really wanted. He’s two months old and has already learned the art of the fake-out. When walking on his leash, he seems to be going where you want to go, but then he lunges in another direction, sometimes spinning me in circles trying to keep up with him.

BlondieThis is Blondie, Dagwood’s four-month old sister. Obviously being so close in age, they’re not siblings by blood, but they’re definitely buddies. She’s pretty energetic, too, and seems very interested in the cats. The cats, on the other other hand, aren’t remotely close to being interested in Blondie. Neither were the birds at the pet store. The ferrets, however, seemed to like her a lot.

Dagwood and Blondie (the names they came with and we decided to keep) have been members of our family for six days. There have been moments when it’s felt like about a thousand days, but for the most part, we’re loving it.

Jack seriously wants to love them. He barks and cries to be with them, but he’s just a little too big and enthusiastic about it right now, so we’re keeping visits strictly supervised, very brief, and fairly infrequent at this point. It may take a couple of weeks – or longer – before he settles down and isn’t quite as excited, but that’s okay.

It’s probably for the best anyway. Jack is a middle-aged now (he just turned seven on December 5th) and they’re little bundles of energy (between them, they have enough to power NYC for about a century), and he’s just kind of laid back. They might tire him out soon enough – almost as much as they tire us out.

But then they tire themselves out too. Eventually…

Dagwood and Blondie 2Can I get a heartfelt ‘awwwwwww’ please?

I should clarify that we adopted the puppies from a local shelter. We just go to a pet store that allows you to bring your four-legged kids with you. In fact, we took them back on Sunday to have a picture taken with Santa. Hopefully it will arrive in the mail before it’s time to post this.

Just a quick update since I wrote this a couple of days ago. So far, no picture with Santa, we found out that Blondie has her adult canine teeth – making her closer to six or seven months old, and the vet thinks Dagwood is about three months old.

I’ve found some great training videos and am working with Dagwood. My son has to work with Blondie because she’s too strong for me at the moment. Case in point – when she took off after Sam, our oldest cat, tonight. He chased Jasper about twelve hours ago … and Jasper hasn’t left my bedroom since.

Yup. Life is definitely exciting with a couple of new puppies in the house. And I’ll probably post so many new updates on their progress that you’ll get tired of hearing about them – but I’m a new puppy mama and kind of in love with them. 🙂

Oh… And one more thing. If anyone has some miracle tips on loose leash walking (and leaving cats alone) for pit mix puppies … please … feel free to share them!

A handful? That’s one way to put it, lol, but we love them. I love them more when they’re not trying to jerk my arms out of their sockets. They’re very energetic, enthusiastic, and already pretty darned strong. They’re learning though. And thanks. I think we’re going to need all the best wishes possible. Still got a kind of war going on between them, Jack and the cats. 😀 😀 😀
