A Fine Mess: A Love Inspired Christian Romance Kindle Edition
What readers are saying about A Fine Mess
~ As a pastor, I have read many books that are called Christian, and a lot of them come off preachy or feel awkward if you just want to read a novel about Christian people living their lives. In this case, Kristy has overcome that, and has created a very believable story about real individuals.
~ This was a very sweet, refreshing Christian romance. Really liked the relationship between Annie and Ian and the fact that there was a lot of interaction and dialogue between the two. ~
~ I downloaded this book for free on my kindle, but I would go back and buy it if I had to.
~ She would sacrifice anything for those she loved...
Annie Blake put her life on hold to care for her mother when she was diagnosed with cancer. She didn't consider it a sacrifice as much as a labor of love. But then she learns that her father has done something completely out of character, not to mention criminal, in a misguided attempt to save the life of his wife. Annie realizes she will have to give up more than just a job and an apartment this time. To save him from going to prison, she will have to give up her freedom.
His life was going according to plan - until the day she showed up.
The last thing Ian McCann expected was the bombshell the daughter of an employee dropped in his lap at the start of the three-day weekend. She needed help, and plenty of it. She also needed it immediately, and hoped he would be able to help. He knew that he could, he just wasn't sure he was prepared to give what it would require to fix everything.

From the Author
My father had recently passed away after a thirteen-month battle with cancer. At that point I was still missing him terribly, and struggling with so many questions. What if it hadn't taken so long to get a diagnosis? What if his oncologist had considered complementary treatments in addition to radiation and high doses of chemotherapy? Would the outcome have been any different?
The questions continued to plague me and I realized I needed to write about it. A Fine Mess was the result. Much of what I included were things I wish my father had been open to ... the things my sister and I spent countless hours researching, as well as trying to capture the emotions my siblings and I experienced during that difficult time in our lives. In the end though, the outcome was always in God's hands - for both my father and Annie's mother.
This story helped me work through my grief, and for that I'll always be grateful.

About the author
Kristy K. James' first goal in life was to work in law enforcement, until the night she called the police to check out a scary noise in her yard. Realizing that she might someday have to investigate scary noises in yards just as dark as hers if she continued on that path, she turned to her other favorite love...writing. Since then her days have been filled with being a mom and reluctant zookeeper, creating stories, and looking for trouble in her kitchen.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs a pastor, I have read many books that are called Christian, and a lot of them come off preachy or feel awkward if you just want to read a novel about Christian people living their lives.
In this case, Kristy has overcome that, and has created a very believable story about real individuals.
Annie Blake, a Christian, marries Ian, who is not a believer, in a marriage of convenience to save her father from jail. But, she finds herself in a quandary, since Ian wants to end the marriage after 5 years, and as a Christian, she does not believe in divorce.
Against this scenario, her mother has cancer, which brings many emotional moments to the story. Contrasting that, there are many funny moments as the backgrounds of Annie and Ian come together ... Including his first opportunity to help out with babysitting, which ends in a hilarious disaster.
Since my sister is a cancer survivor, I know much about the heartbreak of treatments, hopes, and fears, and I found myself touched deeply by the story. While it is intended as a romance, it is much deeper than that. In fact, at the end of the book, I found myself wanting more.
As a top reviewer, Kristy provided me with a copy of the book, so that I could read it and decide if I was comfortable reviewing it. I receive many offers from authors, and am happy to have accepted this one, and can recommend the book to friends as well as here on Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDefinitely a must read for anyone who enjoys a good, honest, clean, christian romance!
Ms. James's characters spring off the page and she has a way of making them seem like real people you would have met just walking around town.
Ms. James also has a sense of humor that is unparalled. The scene where Ian is babysitting is truly a laugh out loud moment that I could see actually happening in real life.
Annie and Ian are truly a match made in heaven even though strange circumstances caused them to get together in the first place.
After reading this book I quickly downloaded the Reluctant Guardian and The Daddy Pact. Both of which didn't fail to please and entertain.
Since Daddy Pact is the first in a series, I definitely can't wait for the rest of the series.
Great job Ms. James!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great story. You can kind of figure out what is going to happen but there is enough depth to the characters and storyline that keeps you reading. There is one thing that is not cleaned up at the end of the book that you really wish was resolved, but after thinking about it, you understand why it's left out there. Annie, Maddie, Paul, Ian are great characters and this was a great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am an avid reader and so I am very critical about what I read. But I truly LOVED this book. I finished it in a day because I couldn't put it down! The story line was great and the build-up of the characters was really good! (Which is lacking in many writers' books) I also loved the subtle way the author brought God and the Bible into the story. It wasn't preachy at all. Personally, it doesn't matter to me whether it is preachy or not but I know that is a big factor for many people. I would have liked for the ending to go a little further but even so it was still a wonderful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGiving less than 5 stars isn't easy for me. Obviously it isn't easy for most of the other reviewers of this book.
What I liked:
No graphic sex, violence, cursing, witchcraft, etc. It was a clean read that I'd hand to my preteen daughter interested in romantic novels. The plot was very predictable, so I didn't mind setting it aside to take care of meal prep or the laundry, nor did it keep me awake at night.
What I didn't like:
It was so very predictable. I felt there were several twists and turns that were missed that would have made it better.
Lack of a good editor. There were grammatical and structure errors that should have been caught. It's a pet peeve of mine, and makes me very skeptical of trying indie authors.
As another reviewer mentioned, the ending felt rushed, as if the author was in a rush to finish it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a story of a marriage of convenience, and it's overtly Christian. There's a lot of teasing and bantering about some Christian tenets because one of the main characters is not a believer, but they are both nice people.
I found myself chuckling through a lot of this story and crying, too, at a few serious moments and some just plain sweet ones.
I really enjoyed this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnnie make the sacrifice to save her father from prison for embezzlement from his boss's company by marrying his boss Ian McCann. Ian sees Annie's father as an uncle/father he has never had so he sees the marriage as a way to protect Paul and gain his inheritance so he can start his own company.
She is a believer and he is not, follow their journey towards love and finding God's have and forgiveness to a possible happily ever after.
This is my first experience with Kristy James but it defiantly won't be my last!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a well-written story with a different spin on one of my favorite marriage of convenience tropes, with engaging, likable characters :)

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI like this story very much. It is a clean Christian romance with nothing but a couple of chaste kisses mentioned.
It appeals to me as the author points out what the Bible teaches about re-marrying after divorce-something close to my heart as my husband left me.
I love the way the characters interact with each other and would love another story about what happens after this.....
Thanks for a great read!

7daymacReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 24, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Christian read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe characters and story was multi dimensional I was left wanting to know more about the characters lives because they were so believable real. I hope this is the start of a series.
Lancashire LassReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 1, 20141.0 out of 5 stars Offensive to right thinking women.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI bought this book expecting a light enjoyable read, what I got was constant references to god and the bible and characters who fall to their knees praying at the drop of a hat. I know this is only mindless chic lit but when I came to a passage where a presumably intelligent 21st century women said she must obey her husband and be submissive because the bible said so I found this deeply offensive and returned the book for a refund. This should definitely be classed as religious fiction and not romance.
